Extended School Year (ESY) To-Do List — With Support from Levy Educational Advocacy

As summer approaches, families of students with disabilities may be asking: “Is my child eligible for Extended School Year services?” or “How do we make ESY meaningful?” At Levy Educational Advocacy, we’re here to help families navigate this process with clarity and confidence.

What is Extended School Year (ESY)?

ESY services are special education and related services provided beyond the normal school year. They are not the same as summer school — ESY is designed to maintain skills, prevent regression, and ensure FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education).

ESY To-Do List for Families

Know Your Rights

  • ESY is part of your child’s IEP — not an optional programs

  • Eligibility is based on data, not a diagnosis.

  • Ask for a team meeting if ESY hasn’t been discussed yet.

Gather Data

  • Collect progress monitoring reports, teacher feedback, and examples of regression.

  • Use Bring Your Own Data (BYOD) strategies to document any skill loss over breaks.

Clarify Goals

  • Ensure the IEP team defines what skills ESY will address.

  • Focus on critical life skills or areas most vulnerable to regression.

Ask the Right Questions

  • What services will be provided? (e.g., speech, OT, reading intervention)

  • Will it be delivered by a certified special education teacher?

  • Is there an opportunity for individual or small-group instruction?

Plan for Transportation and Schedule

  • Transportation must be provided if it’s necessary for your child to access ESY.

  • Ask about location, dates, and format (in-person vs virtual).

Final Thoughts

ESY isn’t about enrichment — it’s about maintaining essential progress. Don’t wait for the school to bring it up. Be proactive, be prepared, and bring your data. At Levy Educational Advocacy, we’re here to ensure that your child’s summer services are purposeful, equitable, and aligned with their needs.
